- Affect is usually a verb (to influence); effect is usually a noun (a result).
- Use RAVEN: Remember Affect Verb, Effect Noun.
- Exceptions: "effect change" means to cause change; "affect" is a noun only in psychology.
Affect vs effect: the difference at a glance
| Word | Usual part of speech | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| affect | verb | to influence or change | Caffeine affects sleep. |
| effect | noun | a result or consequence | Caffeine has an effect on sleep. |
| effect (rare) | verb | to bring about | The new head effected major changes. |
| affect (rare) | noun | observed emotion (psychology) | The patient showed flat affect. |
How to use affect
Use affect when something acts on something else. Because it is a verb, it changes form with tense: affect, affects, affected, affecting.
- Lack of sleep affects concentration.
- The strike affected thousands of commuters.
- How will the new rules affect students?
- She was deeply affected by the film.
A quick test: if you can swap in influence or change and the sentence still works, you want affect.
How to use effect
Use effect for the outcome itself. It usually follows an article or adjective such as the, an, a strong, side or long-term.
- The effect of the policy was immediate.
- Exercise has a positive effect on mood.
- The medicine had no side effects.
- The new law takes effect in January.
- The film relies on special effects.
If you can swap in result, you want effect.
How to remember the difference
Remember RAVEN: Remember, Affect is a Verb, Effect is a Noun. Another trick: A comes before E in the alphabet, and an action (affect) comes before its end result (effect). "The arrow affects the target; the effect is the end."
Tricky cases and exceptions
"Effect change" vs "affect change". To effect change means to cause change to happen (a rare verb use). To affect change means to influence change that is already happening. "The protests effected reform" says the protests made reform happen.
"Affect" as a noun. In psychology, affect means a visible emotional state: "The patient presented with a flat affect." Outside psychology you will almost never need this.
"In effect" means in practice or in operation: "The ban is still in effect." "To that effect" means with that meaning: "She said something to that effect."
Affected can also mean artificial or put on: "an affected accent".
Affect vs effect in academic writing
Research writing uses both words constantly, especially when discussing causes and outcomes. Write "X affects Y" or "X has an effect on Y", never "X effects Y" unless you mean X brings Y into existence. In statistics, "effect size" and "main effect" are fixed noun phrases. Avoid overusing either word: precise verbs such as increases, reduces, delays or predicts often say more than affects, and markers notice the difference. See our null vs alternative hypothesis guide for how to describe effects in results.
